Oliver thought Scarlett sounded like exactly his sort of woman, tall, blonde, with blue eyes and an hourglass figure. So he readily agreed to complicated arrangements for meeting one evening, at an address in a suburb unfamiliar to him. He assumed he was picking her up from her home, and they would go out for a drink. When he got to the house, it appeared a party was in progress, with lots of people and a bouncer guarding the front door. He explained he had come to meet Scarlett, and was given entry.
It was not an ordinary party, but a swinging house party. Men and women were in various states of undress in all the rooms, engaged in sexual activity in pairs, in small groups, or sometimes just watching. He was told that as a newcomer, he was allowed to stay dressed and just observe this time, if he did not want to join in. If he returned to attend any future party, he would be expected to perform. When he finally met her, Scarlett seemed disappointed that he did not want to join the action, and went off to have a good time again.
After an hour at the party, Oliver decided he was unlikely to take up swinging. There appeared to be some element of ‘pot luck’ about pairings, and he preferred to have a lot more control over his choice of partner. The very public nature of the sexual activity encouraged competitive rivalry in performance, especially among the young men, he thought. But what he found most disconcerting was the pursuit of orgasmic sex in an impersonal context. Sex became a spectator sport, a competition, almost a porn show, divorced from any relationship or social context. He could see how this might appeal to libidinous young men but decided it was not for him. He preferred to stay private, know his partner, and have some sort of a relationship.
